Hello fellow travelers! Here is what we got up to on day 3 of our Yellowstone Trip! We went to South Dakota. The first stop we made was in Mitchell, South Dakota, home of the famous Corn Palace. We also visited the I-90 Rest Stop, where Dignity of Earth and Sky are located. Finally, we went to Wall Drug, the biggest drug store in the continental United States.

The Corn Palace

The Corn Palace is a multi-purpose recreational building and arena in Mitchell, South Dakota. The palace is a Moorish Revival style building with the outside being covered by crop art. What is unique about the Corn Palace is that every one of its murals was created with corn and other grains. The Corn Palace houses The Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers basketball team. It is also home to the local high school’s basketball team.

Some more pictures of the outside, I love the little murals on the side of the building.

Dignity of Earth and Sky

Dignity of Earth and Sky is a sculpture created by Dale Claude. The sculpture shows an indigenous woman in Plains-style dress. This is the clothing style of the Lakota tribe, who are native to the area. She is receiving a star quilt. Dignity of Earth and Sky, alongside the Missouri River Overlook, are both located in Chamberlain, South Dakota. This makes it one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful rest stop I’ve ever been to.

More information on the sculpture. It was a gift from the Norm and Eunabel McKie family. This gift honors the 125th year of South Dakota being a state.

The Missouri River. I was surprised by how blue the Missouri River is. It is striking compared to the Mississippi River, which is mud brown.

Plaques commemorating the sculpture.

Inside the I-90 Rest Stop. It had many informative dioramas, displays, and brochures. I loved learning how the indigenous people learned to survive.

Wall Drug

Our final stop for this first day in South Dakota was Wall Drug. It is located in Wall, a tiny town of about 700 people. Wall Drug has many cowboy and western-themed shops, alongside the drug store. Wall Drug is unique in the way it runs. From the outside, it seems like a traditional shopping mall; unlike a traditional shopping mall, the stores in Wall Drug, contrarily, are run by one single entity.
