save vs spend: beauty edition

Hi pretties! Here are the areas of beauty where I save and spend. Although I love indulging in beauty products, sometimes a little saving is needed here and there.

Where I Prefer to Save

Mascara

Most of my mascaras are from the drugstore or are relatively affordable. I save when it comes to mascara because typically, mascara is meant to be thrown out after three months. I also don’t find much difference when it comes to affordable mascara compared to high end mascaras. My favorite brand to get affordable mascara is Essence, particularly their Princess line.

Face wash

Another area of beauty that I prefer to save on is face wash. I prefer to save on face wash because it’s a thing that you slather on your face for two minutes and then wash off. There is literally no need to buy an expensive face wash when it’s just going to be on your face for less than 20 minutes.

Lipsticks and lipglosses

I tend to save when it comes to lipsticks and lipglosses because they wear off so quickly. I don’t see the point in spending money on something that’s just going to last a couple of hours before fading away. Lipsticks and lipglosses were never an area of beauty where I liked to spend, because lipsticks and lipglosses are much like mascara: you’re supposed to dispose of them every few months.

Sheet masks

I have never spent more than $3 on a single sheet mask. To use a sheet mask, you simply slap the thing on your face, wait 15-20 minutes, and then take it off. I usually like to save on sheet masks because I end up having to throw them out anyway.

Regular masks

Alongside sheet masks, I prefer to save on regular (the ones you squeeze out of a bottle or scoop out of a tub) masks as well. Like my other reasons for saving on certain products, I don’t like using something that’s only going to be on my face for a few minutes before I rinse it off.

Highlighter

I prefer to save on highlighter because I find that I really don’t use it that much, unless I pair it with a matte blush. I mostly use a touch of highlighter on the tops of my cheekbones, but that’s pretty much the extent unless I’m using it as eyeshadow also. Highlighters can often be too glittery for my liking or too bold.

Where I prefer to splurge

Eyeshadows

I prefer to splurge on my eyeshadows, whether they be singles or palettes. The reason for this is I find that affordable eyeshadow palettes aren’t really that pigmented. Affordable palettes also make a huge mess because I tend to dig at the shadows with my brush in order to get more pigment. I prefer to splurge on eyeshadow simply because the quality of high-end eyeshadows is much better than their affordable counterparts.

Eyeliners

Eyeliners are another area of beauty where I prefer to splurge. I find that many drugstore eyeliners are pencil only or even gel eyeliners where you need a separate brush to apply. There are some decent affordable eyeliners, but I find with most affordable eyeliners they tend to be a bit runny. The pens themselves also sometimes get way too pigmented, leading me to accidentally create a thicker line than I had intended. For this reason, I prefer to stick to higher end eyeliners.

Foundation

I rarely buy foundations these days because I prefer my bare skin. When I do buy foundation, I prefer to splurge, because I find that affordable foundations make my skin feel unpleasant. Affordable foundations feel heavy and oily, and it makes me feel like ripping my whole face off. With higher end foundations, not only do I have better color matches, it also feels much better. I find that many higher-end foundations are way lighter and less oily.

Loose powder

I prefer to splurge on loose powder because I have found I can’t really find loose powder in a drugstore or at Ulta. When I set my face with powder, I often prefer loose powder over pressed powder because I feel like loose powder absorbs oil better and lasts longer.

Skincare

I’m not really a skincare girly, but when I am, I prefer to splurge. I find that affordable or drugstore products often cause me to break out or even sting my face (big ouch). I find that splurging on my skincare means that I can get a better quality product as I will wear it for most of the day anyway.

  1. I pretty much spend and save on makeup in much the same way you do. I usually don’t mind spending a bit more on concealer or foundation as the quality of the blend really does seem to impact how it goes on/looks. I tend to go cheaper on mascara too as I also don’t really find much difference between drugstore and more expensive stuff (especially, as like you mentioned, it gets thrown out after three months). This was a great reminder to be more discerning about what I get—thanks!

  2. It was interesting to read about the beauty products you save on and others you splurge on. That’s a good point about face washes because you literally wash it off after a couple of minutes.
I splurge on eyeshadow too because many affordable palettes are chalky and have to be built up a lot whereas you can depend on high-end eyeshadow to have good pigment.
I used to splurge on foundation and concealer, but now I’ve been using Essence since it is a lot more affordable in Denmark and I also don’t wear makeup up that often.
