5 mistakes I made in my blogging journey

Hi pretties! I’ve been blogging for almost a whole decade (time really flies, doesn’t it?). There are some things I wish I did in my blogging journey that I didn’t know before. Here are 5 mistakes I made in my blogging journey in the decade I’ve been blogging!

Not promoting my blog

For a long time, I thought people would naturally find my blog if I posted enough. I learned the hard way that if you want your blog to be successful, you need to promote it. Due to me not knowing, I’ve lost out on a good 5-6 years of not promoting my blog. As a consequence, I feel that promoting myself from the start would have given me more views. It would have also provided a better chance at monetizing my blog.

Trying to stick to trends

Another mistake I made in my blogging journey is trying to stick to trends. I remember when I first started blogging as a wee 20 year old in community college. Everyone and their mother was posting makeup review after makeup review. I thought to be successful, I needed to buy a lot of makeup to review. It turns out that you don’t need to buy a ton of the newest makeup releases to be successful. Rather, what makes bloggers successful is their ability to help others solve a problem.

Sticking to a good blog name from the start

Over the years, my blogging journey has taken me through at least 4-5 blogs. I remember I started out as a bilingual English-Dutch blogger. I was in a long-distance relationship with a Dutch boy at the time. Then it turned into a typical blog name (Blush and Peony…I still cringe thinking about it). After that, it turned into Hello, it’s Winnie, which is now my name in the Geoguessr community. Then it was the Neurodivergent Minimalist, as I wanted to focus on minimalism at the time. Now, I’m at the final iteration of my dream lifestyle blog name, which is my full name.

From the beginning, I wish I had picked a good blog name and stuck with it. That would have saved me the trouble of starting over multiple times. I’ve had to restart half a dozen times in the decade I’ve been blogging. What’s done is done, and I am now very happy with the current iteration of my lifestyle blog.

Spending all my money on my blog to fit in

A major regret in my blogging career is spending all my money on my blog. I did this to fit in with the other bloggers I saw on social media. I would see countless bloggers and YouTubers buy makeup, clothing, etc. I would follow suit. At the time, I had undiagnosed autism and ADHD, so those two factors exacerbated my financial situation. I now know that I can blog without having to spend money. There are so many things to blog about, from shopping your makeup stash, shopping your closet, and the like.

Not having multiple blogs for my niches

The final thing I regret doing is not having multiple blogs for my niches. I like a lot of things. For example, I love makeup and beauty, games, travel, and photography. Unfortunately, it would be nonsensical to combine those all into one blog, unless it was solely a hobby. Blogging for me is still a hobby, but it’s one I’m starting to take more seriously. Now I have three separate blogs. One blog covers all things lifestyle, including beauty, fashion, home decor, and content creation. Another is dedicated to travel. The last one focuses on photography. There is also one for games as well that is in the works.
